The Alaska Highway connects Dawson Creek (British Columbia, Canada) with Delta Junction in Alaska. Of it’s 1,390 mile length, only about 200 are actually in Alaska – we went on a short road trip!

To Denali National Park via Talkeetna, Alaska, USA (August 2025)
Squashed into the smallest car in Alaska, we head north to Denali National Park, home to America’s highest mountain and six million acres of taiga, tundra and trees. The quirky historical town of Talkeetna with its unique old time Alaska feel is a worthwhile stop en route.

Kodiak became the capital of Russian America in 1799, until Alaska was sold to America in 1867. From the fur trade to fishing, the island has a varied history and is still pleasantly off the beaten track – beautiful scenery and the world’s largest bears are two of the big attractions.

The Alaskan Marine Highway reaches the parts other ships don’t reach – we climb aboard the Trusty Tusty in Dutch Harbour, Unalaska, for the scenic 2½ day trip through the Aleutian Islands to Kodiak and on to Homer – camping is optional but much more fun!

Unalaska forms part of the Aleutian Islands and has a colourful history of native Alaskans, Russian occupation and WW2 defences. Today it is the fishing powerhouse of America. Allied with plentiful marine and animal life, it is a fascinating place to explore by car and foot and best of all: no bears!

The Hatcher Pass, through the Talkeetna mountains, is easily accessible from Anchorage, yet the rugged country is still wild and unspoilt. Visit to hike, to ski or explore the mining history of the area – there are still extensive ruins.

Nestling under the glaciers of the Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the once busy copper mining town of Kennecott is still amazingly preserved. McCarthy was it’s racier neighbour. Both can be reached via the McCarthy Road, which follows the route of the old railway line which once carried away the ore.

Named number 2 on National Geographic’s ‘Best Drives in the World’ list, the Denali Highway stretches 134 miles between Cantwell on the Parks Highway and Paxton on the Richardson Highway. Once the only route to Denali National Park it passes through a wilderness of tundra and mountains that will take your breath away – if the weather cooperates long enough for you to see the view!
