There are some places in life one feels lucky to get to once. Now we were on our 3rd visit to Ushuaia and it was just as beautiful as ever. We had a week to kill before a cruise – time to go beagling!

One of the most important museums in Argentina, the Museo de Arqueologia de Alta Montana holds the mummies of 3 Inca children, buried alive on a high mountain top in a child sacrifice ceremony nearly 500 years ago. The artefacts recovered from the bodies are superb and the children, beautifully preserved by the cold, dry air are very moving: simply unmissable!

Flight 571 Uruguayan Air Force crashed in the Andes on the 13th October, 1972, whilst carrying 5 crew and 40 passengers to a rugby game in Chile. What happened next became the subject of the famous book, and subsequently film, Alive! The site is high in the mountains and can only be reached on foot or by horseback – we chose to ride there.

After the desert, the cloud forest. Calilegua National Park is just to the north east of Salta and has one of the most diverse habitats for flora and fauna in Argentina. We headed into the high mountainous countryside to explore the forest.
