The Alaskan Marine Highway reaches the parts other ships don’t reach – we climb aboard the Trusty Tusty in Dutch Harbour, Unalaska, for the scenic 2½ day trip through the Aleutian Islands to Kodiak and on to Homer – camping is optional but much more fun!

Unalaska forms part of the Aleutian Islands and has a colourful history of native Alaskans, Russian occupation and WW2 defences. Today it is the fishing powerhouse of America. Allied with plentiful marine and animal life, it is a fascinating place to explore by car and foot and best of all: no bears!

The Road to McCarthy, Alaska, USA (June 2025)

Nestling under the glaciers of the Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the once busy copper mining town of Kennecott is still amazingly preserved. McCarthy was it’s racier neighbour.  Both can be reached via the McCarthy Road, which follows the route of the old railway line which once carried away the ore.

Driving the Denali Highway, Alaska, USA (June 2025)

Named number 2 on National Geographic’s ‘Best Drives in the World’ list, the Denali Highway stretches 134 miles between Cantwell on the Parks Highway and Paxton on the Richardson Highway. Once the only route to Denali National Park it passes through a wilderness of tundra and mountains that will take your breath away – if the weather cooperates long enough for you to see the view!

Stretching 415 miles north through some of Alaska’s greatest wilderness areas, the Dalton Highway is one of the world’s iconic road trips. Built to support the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, the road shadows the pipeline, enters the Arctic Circle and ends in the desolate oil fields of Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay – how could we not resist the challenge?

The Steese Highway, A Roadtrip in Northern Alaska, USA (June 2025)

The Steese Highway connects Fox, just to the north of Fairbanks, with Circle, 161 miles away on the Yukon River. The road offers pristine rivers, 3 mountain passes and two quirky towns which owe their existence to gold mining.
